Growing guides by month

When you’re growing food and flowers from seed, you’ll want to organise your seed sowing by month. This way, you’ll know when to start each seed. Each of these guides contains suggestions and instructions for starting various fruit and flower seeds, but they are by no means exhaustive.

It should be noted that I am based in the Midlands, UK. If you live in the South, you may be able to do things a little earlier, and if you live further north, it may be beneficial for you to start things slightly later.

Wherever in the world you live, a lot will revolve around your last frost date; many plants cannot be moved outside until the danger of frost has passed. Most seeds are started under cover (either on a sunny window sill inside your home, or in a greenhouse or polytunnel) and then plants are moved outside when the weather is warm enough and they are big and strong enough to survive.

If you’d like to find out more about obtaining seeds and the equipment needed to start seeds, you can check out my pages on seed suppliers and seed starting.
